OUr AWSM Chapter

The Association for Women in Sports Media (AWSM) is 501(c)(3) organization that nationally works to promote and increase diversity in sports media through career-enhancement networking and mentoring initiatives as well as the internship/scholarship program.The University of Oklahoma’s chapter of AWSM was founded in 2014. We are one of only 17 student chapters in the nation.  We actively recruit new members each semester and work to educate and discuss the advancement of women in the sports media industry from public relations to journalism. Each year, AWSM hosts a national convention and this summer it will be in Arizona.

OUr Mission

Our chapter has had the privilege of sending one of our advisors and one student to the national AWSM convention since our start in 2014. However, last year the University of Oklahoma was not student-represented at the convention and we want to change this. The convention allows for our officers to learn and develop ideas from other student run chapters and the chance to hear from professionals; including this year’s keynote speaker, Beth Mowins–– a pioneer in play by play for women. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to send three officers to Arizona for the convention this summer. The money raised will help pay for the cost of flights, hotels and the registration fee. We are eager to learn new recruiting techniques, fundraising strategies and programming ideas.
