Did you know 74% of high school girls have an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)? Yet the national average of female engineering undergrads is only 21%. The need for female students to continue into STEM fields is a national concern.
OU Engineering is a leader in the nation with 24% of female students studying engineering. This year, we will expand our efforts and launch a full-scale Women in Engineering Program! Our mission is to be the first public university to reach 50% female engineering students.
Students already benefit from a variety of opportunities including:
Scholarships for incoming and current students
K-12 Outreach
Guest Speakers
Professional Development
Corporate Engagement
Student Organization Support
In the fall of 2016, we will establish the Women in Engineering Program which will include three critical components! Our goal is to raise $12,000 to kick start this new programing that will enhance the opportunities and support for our female engineers.
Taking place in the residence halls, first-year students will be given the opportunity to visit with the Director of Women in Engineering, students, faculty and industry sponsors throughout the year. Meetings will include life skills and professional development, discussions on opportunities in engineering and support for female students.
Peer and corporate mentorship is a proven way to support an engineering student as she continues to grow in her skill, complete internships and take on a corporate role.
A yearly opportunity for WIE student leaders and female engineering students to come together, establish peer connections and build a supportive community.
The Women in Engineering Program will recruit and retain female students in engineering. Under this umbrella, much needed programming will continue to motivate and support our female students throughout their time at OU. We cannot do this without your support. With state and university budget cuts looming, it takes the Sooner community to unite and ensure that we continue to pursue excellence.
In the fall of 2015, the OU Society of Women Engineers won the National Society of Women Engineers Student Engineering Challenge! OU Engineering students are world-class leaders. They graduate with a passion to change the world and represent their Sooner family with pride, thanks to their drive in the classroom and their participation in highly developed student programs.
We need your support of our female engineering students and future leaders. We invite you to make a gift and join us in celebrating the success of our students and encouraging the next generation of Sooner women in engineering.
