Design Build Fly 2020

Our Team

We are Crimson Skies! We’re an engineering student competition team at the University of Oklahoma for the 2020 AIAA Design, Build, Fly competition. Our team designs, fabricates, and demonstrates the flight capabilities of an unmanned, electric powered, radio controlled aircraft for a new rule set every year.

We welcome students from all walks of life and encourage them to participate, creating a new foundation for future engineers with hands-on aerospace experience. DBF is a crucial environment where students can experience the difficulties, lessons, and joys of airplane design, but ultimately finish the project as a better engineer.

Our Challenge

This year, the objective of the Design Build Fly competition is to “design, build and test a banner towing bush plane, conduct charter flights to pay for the aircraft and start a banner towing business on the coast of Southern California.” The competition fly-off will be held in Wichita, Kansas on April 16-19. We will be competing against over 100 teams from across the world in tests of vehicle performance and technical knowledge. The competition includes a detailed technical paper as well as three flight missions and a ground mission.

Our Need

We need your help! Our goal is to raise $4,000 to fund the construction of our competition plane and to allow our team members to attend the competition fly-off. This investment will give underclassmen engineering students experience with the competition, and allow them to excel better than ever before in next year’s competition. With 4 top ten finishes over the past decade, our team has a history of success that we would love to continue and improve!
