Petroleum Engineering Student Trip to Dubai

Petroleum Engineering Student Trip to Dubai

Petroleum Engineering is a truly international career with boundless opportunities in the energy industry. Students who graduate with the degree will work in many different cultures throughout their professional careers, some of which diverge drastically from their own. As the preeminent college for energy related study at the university, we would love to help every student gain direct knowledge and experience of the worldwide impact of energy through study abroad opportunities. However, many students will not have the chance to study abroad during their time in the program due to the prohibitive costs associated with international travel. Our goal for this Thousands Strong campaign is to provide a unique opportunity for OU petroleum engineering students to experience firsthand the global nature of the energy industry.

Every year the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) hosts an international event, the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE), which brings together students and industry professionals from around the globe. Since the formation of the OU SPE Student Chapter, we have been able to send a group of students to the ATCE event each year regardless of its location. For the first time in the 91-year history of the conference ATCE is being held in the Middle East, in the city of Dubai. Due to the extended downturn in the market and significant expenses to travel to the host city of Dubai, we are requesting scholarship funding so we can maximize the number of student participants. By attending the conference, our students will have an opportunity to learn about new technologies and techniques from petroleum engineering experts all over the world. Every lecture, event or exhibition they attend will build on the foundation of knowledge they have built during their time at OU. And, best of all, the ATCE conference will train our students to become better engineers while simultaneously immersing them in a critically important region for the energy industry. Please donate to this amazing opportunity, and help our OU students make a difference in the world.

How will your support make an impact?

While the Dubai trip will be a transformative experience for our students, it comes at a substantial cost. The trip will be approximately $3,000 per student, and we would like to do everything we can to make the price more affordable. Our hope is that all interested OU SPE students will be able to attend no matter their financial circumstances. Students will arrive in Dubai on Saturday, September 24th and return the following Friday, September 31st. This schedule will allow the students to fully participate in the three day ATCE conference while also providing ample time for them to experience the local culture and customs of Dubai. Students will have the opportunity to visit renowned areas in the region including Burj Khalifa, Naif Souk, Jumeirah Beach and the Arabian Desert. Whether you choose to support conference event attendance, fund airfare for a student, or provide a full scholarship, please know that your investment in the lives of our students is worthwhile and greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for helping us educate and train the next generation of leaders in the energy industry.

About Us

The University of Oklahoma Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter strives to enhance the technical knowledge of our student members and provide robust networking opportunities within the energy industry. OU SPE maintains an active role on campus by hosting social, philanthropic, and technical events throughout the year. Chapters across the country are evaluated annually by the SPE organization and awarded accolades based on their level of activity across five categories: 1) industry engagement, 2) operations and planning, 3) community involvement, 4) professional development and, 5) innovation. OU’s SPE Chapter has consistently been designated as a “Gold Standard” chapter and in 2016 we received the Outstanding Student Chapter Award, the highest honor for university chapters. Each year, SPE hosts an international competition called the Petrobowl at its Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE). Our chapter is proud be tied for most championship titles among all domestic and international college participants.
