Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is a national organization with the mission to empower the Hispanic community through STEM awareness, access, support and development. At our collegiate chapter at the University of Oklahoma, we strive to live up to the mission by providing networking opportunities, leadership experiences, outreach initiatives, and an overall supportive family environment which we call our SHPE familia. Did you know that Hispanics only account for 13% and 9% of science and engineering bachelor's degrees respectively? Our organization tackles those statistics by providing ample resources and opportunities for engineering students.

Here are more things our chapter focuses on:

  • Professional Development
  • K-12 Specialized Outreach
  • Networking and Mentoring Opportunities
  • Academic Success
  • Community Support

How we are making an impact.

This year, the OU SHPE chapter is focusing on establishing a more sustainable platform for professional development and academic success. Our national conventions typically bring in over 6,000 undergraduate & graduate students, professionals, and scientists in a week filled with conferences, workshops, and regional meetings. In addition, there is one of the largest career fairs where distant companies recruit students for summer internships, semester long co-ops, and full time positions. Because of this incredible opportunity, OU SHPE sponsors students to attend these annual national conventions.

Academic success in one of our values here at OU SHPE. Through this value, our chapter hopes to ensure the Hispanic retention rates continue to be fruitful in an especially challenging discipline known as engineering. Our chapters hopes to be a platform so students can continue changing their community with their presence. This means we will host scheduled study nights and provide personal academic guidance. These are tiny steps that will maximize future outcomes. Our general body meetings will include conversations with faculty for students interested in academia along with professionals in the industry that caters towards students interested entering the work force.

How you can help.

Through this Thousands Strong Campaign is to increase the number of students our chapter sponsors to attend our National Convention in 2021 along with finding corporations to sponsor our general body meetings for the following school year 2021-2022.

Historically, our chapter has consistently been able to sponsor 16 undergraduate students to attend national conventions. The cost associated with sponsoring students is composed of transportation, lodging & accommodation, and a developmental fund. Through this campaign, we hope to secure funding for all 16 future attendees. To ensure your donation goes to go usage, the Conference Chair prepares the 16 students attending the National Convention through pre-conference meetings that cover the schedule of the convention, action items preparing for the convention such as a career service visit, and certain requirements during the convention.

For our monthly general body meetings, our chapter plans interactive meetings that inform the population with important resources the College of Engineering provides such as mentoring programs and tutoring services. This is a great opportunity for a company to recruit our ambitious, awe-filled students.
