Society of Women Engineers

Who We Are

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is an organization that provides a community for women in engineering at the University of Oklahoma. SWE's fundamental principles include increasing the representation of women in engineering and contributing to foster a better world.

Our Project - Expand Community Outreach

SWE is involved in multiple outreach and volunteering activities. Last November, we placed third on the Schlumberger Serve to Succeed social impact challenge as a result of our work with local not-for-profit organizations such as Flames to Hope or the Food & Shelter. Every year, with the collaboration of the Women in Engineering program, we host Girls Learning and Applying Math and Science and High School Girl's Day. These outreach and recruitment events give middle school and high school girls the opportunity to have a glimpse into the amazing fields of science and technology.

With this project, our goal is to grow our community outreach by increasing our volunteering activities, strengthening our collaboration with local not-for-profit organizations and extending our annual recruitment events to elementary school girls with "Introducing Girls to Engineering Day". As an organization inspired by the vision to create "a world with gender parity and equality in engineering and technology", we would like to sponsor STEM badges and kits for girl scouts to spark their interest in robotics, coding, manufacturing and many other technical areas.

The Impact

Through outreach and volunteering, we are not only serving the Norman community, we are also "expanding the image of the engineering and technology professions as a positive force in improving the quality of life" and hence furthering SWE's mission.

With the establishment of Introducing Girls to Engineering Day and the distribution of STEM badges to girl scouts, this project represents an opportunity to push young girls who aspire for a career in STEM to believe in their dreams.
