PR Student Research Conference

Who We Are

The Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication utilizes experiential learning to get students involved in hands-on work for clients, applied research, and real-world problem solving. The college has five degree tracks including: advertising, creative media production, journalism, professional writing, and public relations. Public relations is the largest degree track in the college with more than 370 current full-time students enrolled. Gaylord's public relations courses allow students to experience amazing opportunities they cannot get anywhere else and fully prepare them for futures in in the profession.

“PR is more than just an industry or major, it is a powerful tool that can be used to connect the world. It is important for practitioners and researchers to target innovative ways to sharpen this tool. I hope to use the agency of my academic career to contribute to the growing knowledge.”

- J.D. Baker, Gaylord Public Relations student, IPRRC presenter

Our Project

As part of Gaylord's 2020 Strategic Plan, the public relations track has focused on providing undergraduate students with research opportunities. This year, seven Gaylord Public Relations students had their research peer-reviewed and accepted to the International Public Relations Research Conference (IPRRC) in Orlando, Fl. The IPRRC has an extremely low acceptance rate and Gaylord is one of the ONLY colleges in the United States that has had undergraduate research accepted and presented at the conference. This Thousand Strong campaign hopes to be able to send ALL SEVEN students to the IPRRC -- which will cost approximately $1,200 per student to attend. This cost includes travel, hotel rooms, registration fees, meals, and printing costs for the conference.

“I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to share the research I have worked so hard on to an international audience. I believe it is really something special when you can contribute just a fraction of something you’ve learned to an audience that is dedicated to making a difference in the world.”

- Courtney Lawson, Gaylord Public Relations student, IPRRC presenter

The Impact

The IPRRC is an exciting and important opportunity for the public relations students as this one-of-a-kind conference allows them not only to share their research but to interact with public relations industry leaders like APCO Worldwide, Edelman, Ketchum, W2O Group, and Weber Shandwick as well as major corporate communications officers from GM, Johnson & Johnson, IBM, Southwest Airlines, and Teneo. In the past, students who have attended the conference have come away with internships, job offers, and important career-building contacts. In addition, other universities attending see our undergraduate researchers as potential Master's and Doctoral students which starts our students thinking about post-undergraduate degrees.

“Public relations research is a growing field with unasked, unanswered questions, and this conference is my next step toward pursuing a career that allows me to explore them.”

- Jensen Armstrong, Gaylord Public Relations student, IPRRC presenter

This Thousand Strong campaign will help support the seven Gaylord PR students so that little to no out of pocket money will be needed for their conference participation. If we cannot raise the money through this campaign there is the distinct chance that some of the seven students may not be able to afford it on their own, and thus not attend.

“The work I’ve done for this conference is allowing me to contribute to the current body of knowledge of public relations. I’m excited to meet people in the field, learn from them, and begin to realize my full potential as a future public relations practitioner.”

- Wyatt Stanford, Gaylord Public Relations student, IPRRC presenter

Please Share

Family, friends, and colleagues we ask that even if you cannot donate at this time, PLEASE SHARE the link to this campaign with those in your network. Your support will help us meet our Thousand Strong campaign goal. Any amount collected over what we have requested will be put into a fund for future Gaylord student research conference travel.

“I am so excited to attend the IPRRC and share my knowledge and findings with others in the industry. It was an honor to work on this project with friends and my most favorite professor. I can’t wait to show off our research to an international audience.”

-Madison Huffling, Gaylord Public Relations student, IPRRC presenter

Thank You

We greatly appreciate your help in our Thousand Strong campaign and your continued efforts toward the OU family. The seven Gaylord PR students would not be able to attend this important conference without your support.

"Having the chance to attend the IPRRC means so much to me because it will be my last opportunity to once again represent OU internationally before I graduate in May."

- Delaney Vaugh, Gaylord Public Relations student, IPRRC presenter

Choose a giving level

Data Analysis

Contribute to printing materials students need to handout at the presentation as well as printing resumes, business cards, and portfolios for networking and professional opportunities.

Manipulating Stimuli

Taxis, Ubers, and Lyfts are just a few miscellaneous expenses students have to cover to get from the airport to the hotel (and back again). Help cover student "getting around" costs.

Central Tendency

Many meals for the conference are covered in the registration fees, but students are on their own for dinners each night. A $50 donation will help cover a few dinners.

Scatter Chart

Hotel rooms in Orlando are $675 total for the 4 nights of the trip. This will help pay for students' stay at the conference hotel.

Ongoing Research

Flights from Oklahoma to Orlando are approximately $500 per student. Help provide travel to the conference by donating at this level.

Significance Level

The approximate cost of sending each student to the conference is $1,100. Giving at this level helps pay for 1/2 the cost of one student's needs.
