OU Steel Bridge Week Four Update

The Steel bridge Design Build Team has had a fantastic year! Although competition did not go as planned with having a bridge failure, the team has learned a lot. Learning from what type of design went well and what did not go well, we know what to incorporate into next year. This is also true for fabrication aspect, more practice welding is needed as this is an area students do not have much experience in. Overall, the team has greatly improved from previous years and hopes to continue to grow with your generous support! We want to reach our goal amount of $1,000 so that we can keep growing and continue to work on the areas needed so we can dominate next year's competition!

 

 

 

OU Steel Bridge Week Three Update

May 01, 2018

The team went to the ASCE regional competition at Carbondale IL, and competed against 13 other schools last weekend. For the first day at competition consisted of displaying the bridge amongst other schools to be judged based on the paint scheme, and poster design.

 

The second day was the timed construction, and loading the bridge to 2500 lbs. The building team finished the construction portion under 25 minutes, with few penalties during the time, and did exceptionally well.

 

When it came to the loading of the bridge things did not go as planned. Upon reaching a load at 2200 lb. a weld holding one of the connections at the bottom of the bridge failed suddenly.

 

However, even though the bridge failed, it was not a design flaw, but a fabrication error. There was a lot learned from this as students can study how the bridge failed and, determine the reason behind it. This promotes overall learning experience for the students, and can be taken with them into the industry.

Even though the competition is now over, the Steel Bridge Design Build Team’s journey, and need for fiscal support, is not over. Your generous support is greatly appreciated! We want to reach our goal amount of $1,000 so that we can work diligently during the fall semester on design and build so we can dominate the competition next year!

 

 

Week Two Update

April 24, 2018

We have reached 56% of the project goal, thanks to all the generous donors! Lets continue on keeping the momentum going so we can reach 100% of our goal!

 

As for an update on the current progress on the Steel Bridge: 

 

Team members have been practicing time construction of the bridge, and has been an average of 23 minutes for each practice run.  

 

The bridge has been painted by team members to represent OU's colors. 

 

 

Week One Update

April 17, 2018

For the first week we have reached 36% of our campaign goal thanks to all the generous donors! Lets keep the momentum going so we can reach our goal!

 

As for an update on the current progress on the Steel Bridge: 

 

Over the past month we have been working hard to finish on time. Team members have been finishing up the majority of the welding on the bridge, and grinding imperfections. As of now the bridge is completed!

 

For the first time in over 10 years, the team has pre-loaded the bridge before competition. The bridge it self weighs in at 193 lb's and was able to hold the maximum load of 2500 lbs that is placed on it during the actual competition.
