Support Hands-On Learning

Support hands-on learning with emerging technologies.

With the continued rapid advancement of technology, students are challenged to learn and experiment with emerging technologies and discover applications that advance research and scholarship across disparate fields. OU Libraries helps bridge the gap of cost, access, and prior knowledge through Innovation @ the Edge, a flexible experimentation and innovation space that provides access to the latest tools used in research, instruction and knowledge creation- including 3D printing tools, custom virtual reality workstations, microelectronics kits, and software and data skill development. OU Libraries virtual reality learning platform supports course instruction from biomedical engineering to journalism to law and many more. Please consider investing in emerging technologies to ensure our students are well prepared for success in their respective fields, and that faculty have opportunities to experiment with the tools that can revolutionize their research.

Examples include:

Google AIY Kits

The University of Oklahoma Libraries Hands-on Introduction to Artificial Intelligence provides students the opportunity to learn about and directly interact with AI using the Google Voice Kit AIY. A series of lessons provide an introduction to STEM and artificial intelligence.

Canon 6D Mark II DSLR camera with a Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM prime Lens and a standard 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens

This camera will provide two functions, photogrammetry and project/workshop documentation. With this tool, higher quality images can be gathered to load into processing software, thereby producing higher-quality 3D models and content for various research projects and course integrations across campus. These techniques are already being utilized in architecture, art and art history, archaeology, natural history, with more fields just discovering photogrammetry's utility in research and instruction. These workshops and projects have a large potential audience that expands far beyond the OU community.

Lego Mindstorms

Lego Mindstorms is a hardware/software platform produced by Lego for the development of programmable robots based on Lego building blocks. These kits enable students to build, program and showcase their creations while working as a team. Use of Lego Mindstorms can encourage users to explore working with electronics, and could assist with outreach to K-12 public education.

Samsung Odyssey VR Headset

The next-generation of virtual reality headsets, which includes the Samsung Odyssey, will support a wider range of use cases and a more diverse audience previously encumbered by limitations such as cost, configuration issues, and performance. With this tool students will be supported in multi-disciplinary research applications including digital humanities, structural biology, and anthropology, both within the classroom and through VR-based course integrations.
